Bringing together an interdisciplinary collection of faculty, researchers, clinicians, and practitioners — the Center for Biomedical Engineering Systems (CBES) at the UNC Charlotte provides an essential collaborative environment for solving biomedical issues.
Established in 2005, CBES was founded by Director Robin Coger, who was a professor in the Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science Department. “By the very nature of our field,” Dr. Coger said, “successes in biomedical engineering require collaborative efforts from multiple disciplines. It is simply not possible for an individual researcher to garner the full expertise needed to solve the complex problems of biomedical research and development.”
The CBES research team currently consists of 68 affiliated researchers distributed across 4 Colleges of the University (the Colleges of Engineering, Liberal Arts & Sciences, Health & Human Services, and Computing & Informatics), and Biomedical Research Institutions (Cannon Research Center, OrthoCarolina Research Institute, and the Levine Cancer Institute in the Charlotte metropolitan area)
Because the field of biomedical engineering is broad, CBES is organized into “Focus Areas” or subgroups, designed to build community and discussion between persons with complementary interests within the Center. Since its establishment, the Center has continued to evolve these Focus Areas in response to the needs and interests of its researchers. The four focus areas of CBES are Applied Cancer Technology and Therapeutics, Medical Therapies & Technologies, Biomechanics and Mobility Research, and Molecular Engineering & Design.
